Senior Day Victory for the Dragons

Post Game Salute
Box Score October 31, 2015
Jackson, TN
In most competitions, it is not necessarily how you start, but how you finish. This saying was exactly on target for the Dragons football contest on Halloween day against the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University. The Dragons provided a fourth quarter come-from-behind victory that would send twelve senior members to the locker room with a great story to tell in the future.

1st Quarter:
The Thorobreds received the opening kick-off and was the first to put points on the board.  A four-play, 1:56 drive resulted in a touchdown run from 19 yards by Reginal Harris. The Thorobreds dominated the time of possession in the first quarter as the Dragons offense could not get started.

2nd Quarter:
The Thorobreds scored on the first possession of the second quarter with another Reginal Harris touchdown run…this time from 68 yards as he turned the corner on the left side of the field for the touchdown. The extra point would put the Dragons trailing 14-0. The Dragons adjusted to the soggy field conditions and was able to move the ball in range for Carlas Moore Jr. to connect with a 36 yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-3. With three seconds to go before halftime, the Dragons attempted a long range field goal that hit the left post and sent the game to a 14-3 halftime score.

3rd Quarter:
As the rain continued to fall on Lane Field, the third quarter saw no points scored, but still had plenty of action. Blocked punts, fumbles, and interceptions took center stage which put pressure on both defenses. It was as if Michael Jackson's Halloween song, "Thriller," was playing throughout the stadium.

4th Quarter:
The faithful crowd that came to support the Dragons on the last home game of the season got their money's worth in the final quarter as the Dragons scored on three opportunities. Carlas Moore Jr. got the scoring started connecting on a 27-yard field goal to close the gap to 14-6. Marcus Reynolds connected with Darius Mitchell from 27 yards out for the Dragons first touchdown at the 6:01 mark of the fourth quarter. The Dragons connected on a two-point conversion as Reynolds dialed his own number around the right end for a 14-14 score.  After the Dragons defense held tight on the next series, the Dragons started the next scoring drive with 2:40 left in regulation from their own 25 yard line. A rushing attempt for one yard and a pass completion for two yards had the Dragons facing 3rd down and seven with time running down. On the next play Reynolds connected with Aaron "Big Play" Thomas for a 72 yard catch and run for the Dragons touchdown. The extra point was good, giving the Dragons the first lead of the day at 21-14 with one minute to play in the game. The Thorobreds were not finished. They connected on pass plays, and using their time-outs, they came within striking distance with four seconds to play. From the sixteen yard line, Quarterback Ora Johnson heaved a pass into the end zone only to be intercepted by the Dragons' Brandon Banks for a final score of 21-14 for the Dragons victory.

Offensive leaders for the Dragons included Marcus Reynolds with 175 yards of total offense, including the two touchdown passes. Darius Mitchell collected 123 yards of total offense, including a touchdown. Aaron Thomas collected 91 yards on four receptions, including the 72 yard go-ahead touchdown. Senior Gabriel Mass led the Dragons defense that only allowed 275 yards of offense with 7 tackles, including a quarterback sack and 2 tackles for loss of yards.  Devonta Davis and Brandon Banks collected interceptions for the Dragons, and Justin Hill was in on two forced fumbles.

The Dragons (3-6 overall and 1-4 SIAC Division) finish out their season with a trip to Atlanta, GA to take on the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College on November 7.
