Dragons Battle Bethel in Inaugural “Clash of West Tennessee”

Jackson, Tenn. — Aug. 29, 2026 — The Lane College football team opened its 2026 season Saturday evening against Bethel University in the inaugural “Clash of West Tennessee.”

The contest marked the first football meeting between Lane and Bethel. The regional matchup will continue next season when the Wildcats travel to Jackson to face the Dragons at Lane College.

Bethel scored on its opening possession following a 13-play drive but missed the extra-point attempt. Lane's opening possession ended after five plays, and the Wildcats responded with another touchdown on a five-play drive highlighted by a 50-yard completion.

Lane added a field goal before the end of the opening period, making the score 13-3 after one quarter.

The Dragons began finding their rhythm offensively during the second quarter, but a fumble near midfield ended a promising possession. Bethel took over and advanced to the Lane 30-yard line before a field-goal attempt struck the upright.

The Wildcats later converted another field goal to extend their lead. During the final 30 seconds of the half, Lane connected on consecutive passes of more than 15 yards and advanced to the Bethel 35-yard line. However, the Dragons were unable to add points before halftime and entered the locker room trailing 16-3.

Lane received the ball to begin the third quarter, but its opening possession ended in a three-and-out. The remainder of the period developed into a defensive battle, with neither team scoring as the Dragons kept the Wildcats within reach.

The Lane defense delivered one of the game's biggest plays in the fourth quarter, intercepting a Bethel pass at the Dragons' 20-yard line and returning it 45 yards. The turnover provided Lane with a major momentum boost and favorable field position.

The Dragons drove to the Bethel 14-yard line, but a mishandled exchange in the backfield resulted in a fumble recovered by the Wildcats. The turnover ended Lane's scoring opportunity, and Bethel held on for a 16-3 victory.

Bethel finished with 351 total yards, including 225 passing yards and 126 rushing yards. Lane recorded 162 total yards, with 82 through the air and 80 on the ground.

The Wildcats held the ball for 34:23, while the Dragons recorded 25:37 in possession time. Both teams committed two turnovers and seven penalties. Bethel was penalized for 46 yards, while Lane finished with 55 penalty yards.
