Dragons Come Up Big On Senior Day

The Dragons exploded for a season high 24 points in the first quarter to down the Thorobreds 38-28 on Senior Day. The Dragons elected to receive the ball first from the coin toss and put together an 8-play 80-yard drive resulting in the first touchdown of the quarter.

Senior Quarteback Chris Rini connected with Senior Wide Receiver Gregory Moore for 21 yards and a 7-0 Dragons lead. Senior Cornerback Jack Howard set the Dragons up for the next scoring drive as he scooped up a Thorobreds fumble on the 24 yard line.
Once again the Rini-Moore connection worked to perfection (3 plays 24 yards), this time from 20 yards and a Dragons 14-0 lead. Another Thorobreds fumble at the same location (KSU 24 yard line) recovered by Senior Patrick Neal set up the third touchdown of the quarter. Needing only 5 plays for the score, Rini connected with Duke Coleman for a six-yard touchdown pass and a 21-0 lead for the Dragons. The next scoring drive for the Dragons relied on the leg of Rini as he connected for a 37-yard field goal and a 24-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Thorobreds were denied their first points of the game early in the second quarter as Dewayne Brown broke through to block a 37-yard field goal attempt. Later in the quarter, the Thorobreds put together an 8-play 78-yard drive to start their comeback effort. Adam Robinson connected with Moronkie Tapper for nine yards and a touchdown for a 24-7 score going into halftime.

The comeback effort continued in the third quarter for the Thorobreds as Jac Lockett scrambled in for the score from four yards for a 24-14 Dragons lead. Just before the end of the third quarter, the Dragons defensive unit stepped up again to stop a Thorobreds drive as Ira-George Coates cut in front of the receiver to intercept the pass giving the Dragons a 24-14 lead after three quarters.

Jac Lockett krpt the hopes alive for the visitors, scoring from four yards for a 24-21 score early in the fourth quarter. The Dragons responded quickly as Rini connected with Darius Mitchell for 26 yards and a touchdown for a 31-21 lead for the Dragons. The next series for the Thorobreds ended as a result of an interception by the Dragons. Senior Michael Ruffin stepped in front of the receiver and scampered 50 yards upfield setting the Dragons up for the last score. For his fifth touchdown pass of the game, Rini connected with Jamion Dunning for a 38 yard catch-and-run for a 38-21 lead. Lockett was not finished yet on his big day for the Thorobreds as he scored a third rushing touchdown from 30 yards and a 38-28 final score. With the victory the Dragons moved to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Western Division.
