Box Score Jackson, Tenn. (April 12, 2017) Earlier this season, Crowley's Ridge College came into Jackson and took two games from the Lane College baseball team.
Monday, the Dragons had their shot at vindication and they made the most of their opportunity, taking both games of the doubleheader in Paragould, Ark. in dramatic fashion, picking up the win in the first game, 4-3.
In the top of the seventh with the game tied 3-3, Lane College centerfielder Treivz Brown reached on a one-out walk. After advancing on an infield ground out, Brown scored the go-ahead run off a two-out double down the left field line from shortstop
Chris O'Neal.
It was deja vu all over again in the final matchup of the day. Again, the score was tied 3-3 when the Dragons headed to the plate in the final inning of regulation. Right fielder
Courtney Joyner led off the inning with a single to shallow center and was in scoring position one play later thanks to a sacrifice bunt from centerfielder
Konard Yancie.
Left fielder
Melvin Crayton picked up the RBI on a single to third and put himself in scoring position thanks to a throwing error from the home team. After second baseman
Dante Clay advanced Crayton with a single to right center, shortstop Kieshaun Clark gave the Dragons some insurance with a sacrifice fly giving Lane College a two-run advantage, 5-3.
Clark would hold the Pioneers scoreless in the bottom of the frame for the second straight game, picking up his second save of the afternoon.
A young team with 14 freshmen, including seven starting utility players, the Dragons have slowly been developing this season under Interim Head Coach
John D. Bates.
Bates told his team after losing two to the Pioneers at home in February, it was the Dragons' turn at robbing the home team of a couple of much-needed wins.
"They came here and beat us, and the wins they got were very close games," Bates said. "I knew we could beat them. So, I told them, this time lets return the favor."
