What a great day for some football! The Dragons of Lane College enjoyed the cool, sunny Saturday afternoon as they rolled up 450 yards of total offense to defeat the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College 31-17. Saturday's victory has the Dragons with a 2-0 record and winners of four straight games including victories in the last two games from the 2012 season.
The Dragons relied on a strong defensive effort in the first half, and were able to open up the offensive package in the second half that would swell to a 31-3 lead before the Maroon Tigers closed with two late touchdowns.
Senior Quarterback
Chris Rini (25 of 32- 270 yards) threw three touchdown passes as he connected with six different receivers on the day.
The Dragons took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter as Rini connected on a 26-yard field goal for the only points scored in the quarter. The Maroon Tigers answered with a 34-yard field goal to start the second quarter and tie the game 3-3. At the 11:25 mark, Bradley Landrum hurdled a would-be defender as he headed for his first touchdown of the day with a 22-yard run to the end-zone giving the Dragons a 10-3 lead.
The Dragons defense took control for the remainder of the second quarter. An impressive goal line stand by the defensive unit brought the large crowd to their feet as they stopped the Maroon Tigers on four consecutive running plays from within the 5 yard line.
The second half provided the offensive unit with the opportunity to pull away as they added 21 points to the scoreboard. With 6:19 on the clock, Rini connected on a 41-yard pass to
Gregory Moore for the first touchdown of the third quarter. Later in the quarter, Rini hit Landrum with a 19-yard pass for his second touchdown of the day. The Dragons scored early in the fourth quarter as Rini connected with (FR-WR)
Jamion Dunning on a five-yard pass to the right corner of the end zone.
Adam Adeleke added the extra point, giving the Dragons a 31-3 lead midway into the fourth quarter.
The Maroon Tigers added two late touchdowns from backup quarterback Monqavious Johnson as he connected with Devon Mann on two separate 8-yard touchdowns for a 31-17 final score.
The Dragons had 450-yards of total offense (270 Passing, 180 Rushing), and held the Maroon Tigers to 285 yards of total offense.
Gregory Moore hauled in 8 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, and
Duke Coleman collected 7 passes for 77-yards. The Dragons used seven rushers to collect 180 yards led by Rini with 73 yards, and
Gerald Gaines with 39 yards.
The Dragons will carry their 2-0 start to Upland, IN for their next action as they face the Trojans of Taylor University on September 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM in Indiana.
