Dragons Take the Golden Rams Down Memory Lane
The game was played in Albany, GA, and the year was 1966 when the Dragons and Golden Rams tied 6-6 at the end of the game. On October 8, 2011 the Lane College Dragons re-wrote the record books in the upset victory over #12 ranked Golden Rams of Albany State University. The Dragons captured their first victory in the history of the competition between the two schools 26-24.
The Golden Rams opened the game with a nifty 13-yard kick-off return by Orion Ponder, but found the going tough from that point. The Dragons defense only allowed 5 yards on the opening drive forcing the Golden Rams to punt the ball to the Dragons. Making his second start as the Dragons' Quarterback; McKinsley Marbury directed a 15-play, 55-yard scoring drive for the Dragons offense.  “Ken” as everyone calls Marbury, took the ball into the end zone from 1yard out for his first touchdown of the day. Ryan Bullock added the extra point giving the Dragons a 7-0 lead.
The Golden Rams would answer the call and score a game-tying touchdown on a 9-play, 60-yard scoring drive. Running Back Nathan Hoyle rushed for a tough 11yards and the touchdown for the Golden Rams. Tory Torstenson added the extra point for a 7-7 tie score. Dragons' kick returner Devon Perry electrified the crowd of 1,078 in attendance with his 49-yard return setting up the Dragons offense at the Golden Rams 42 yard line as the time expired in the 1st quarter.
Marbury continued from where he had left off on the previous possession as he led the Dragons down the field for another touchdown. Marbury found Wide Receiver William Golston open in the end zone for a 17-yard connection and a Dragons touchdown. The extra point was blocked giving the Dragons a 13-7 lead. The lead did not last for long as the Golden Rams wasted little time in response to the Dragons touchdown. Once again Nathan Hoyle carried the ball down the sideline for a 33-yard gain which was forced out-of-bounds by the Dragons' Jack Howard. On the next play, quarterback Stanley Jennings connected with Octavius Staton for a 23-yard touchdown. The extra point was straight down the middle of the goal post, putting the Golden Rams ahead 14-13, and plenty of time remaining in the 2nd quarter.
The Golden Rams kick-off sailed 70-yards into the end zone setting the Dragons up at their own 20 yard line. Ken Marbury would sandwich three pass completions around five rushing attempts for his third touchdown of the day.  A 2-yard plunge into the end zone finished an 8-play, 80-yard scoring drive. Ryan Bullock connected with the extra point putting the Dragons back in the lead 20-14. Once again the Golden Rams answered the call, as they finished the 1st half with a 4-play, 57-yard drive for a touchdown. The extra point sent the teams to half-time with the Golden Rams leading 21-20.
In the third quarter, the Golden Rams looked to be driving down the field for another touchdown, but one thing stood in their way. Alan Thompson brought the crowd to their feet with the first of his two interceptions on the day, and a 14 yard return to put an end to the Golden Rams hopes of scoring at that point.  The Dragons' Offensive Line, led by Georgio Washington, continue to battle the big defensive unit of the Golden Rams, allowing the Dragons to move down the field once again. Scoring from 5yards out, Ken Marbury collected his 4th touchdown of the day. The try for an extra point resulted in a bad snap, and a run that fell short of the goal line for a 26-21 Dragons lead.  For the remainder of the game the defense would keep the Golden Rams out of the end zone allowing only a field goal for a 26-24 upset victory over the Golden Rams.
The Dragons improved to a 3-3 overall record, and a 1-2 conference record. October 15, 2011 is the Dragons Homecoming Game. The Tigers from Tuskegee University will make their way to Jackson, TN for the next opportunity for the Dragons. Kick-Off is scheduled for 2 p.m. We invite you to come out early to Lane Field, and help fill the stadium with the excitement of Homecoming 2011. We would also invite everyone to wear your Royal Blue in support of the Dragons.
