Marcus Holliday led the charge with 148 yards rushing Saturday as Lane College ran for 328 yards as a team in a season-opening 40-20 win over Texas College in the second-annual CME Classic.
Quarterback
Marcus Reynolds showed off his skills on the ground as well, picking up 84 yards on eight carries, averaging more than 10 yards per attempt on the ground. Reynolds went 4-for-5 in the air, picking up 58 yards of offense.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Dragons got on the scoreboard first thanks to an 18-yard-run from Reynolds. Lane College took a 10-6 halftime lead into the locker room thanks to a 51-yard field goal from
Vicente Luis Juan Pena as time expired.
Quarterback Thurston Rubin threw back-to-back touchdowns to break the game wide open in the third quarter. First, Rubin hit
MyDarius Trujillo from 40 yards out then he connected with
Ahmad Isaac from 8 yards out to give the Dragons a 24-12 advantage. Reynolds then connected with
Micah Grigsby to give the Dragons a 31-12 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
A safety gave Lane College a 33-12 lead to start the fourth quarter. After a Texas College touchdown and two-point conversion cut the Dragons' lead to 13 points, junior running back
Justin Hill walked the ball in from three-yards-out for the final scoring play of the afternoon.
The Dragons head to Atlanta this weekend to take on SIAC rival Morehouse College. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
