Lane College baseball knocks off Freed-Hardeman in Henderson

Box Score
Henderson, Tenn (April 17, 2017) - All five total runs came in the fifth inning as Lane College brought three across in the top of the inning and were able to do just enough to hold off the Lions in the bottom of the frame to sneak out of Henderson with a 3-2 win.

First baseman Robert Akines led off the inning for the Dragons with a single to right field and advanced  into scoring position when catcher Clemia Jackson went opposite field. Second baseman Melvin Crayton loaded the bases with a single to center field while right fielder Konard Yancie's sacrifice fly put the Dragons on the board.

Lane College added to their lead when left fielder Courtney Joyner hit a two-out, two RBI single to give the Dragons a 3-0 advantage.

But the Lions mounted a comeback in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs before sophomore relief pitcher Keion Allen got Lions' shortstop Quinn Frost to hit a bases-loaded, two-out fly-out to center field.

Lane College starting pitcher freshman Patrick Wright went 4.2 innings. He gave up two earned runs off four hits and struck out two.

The Dragons have six games remaining this season as they travel to Alabama this weekend to take on Tuskegee University starting with a doubleheader on Saturday finishing the road trip with a single game on Sunday. They wrap up the season next weekend as they host Claflin University for a three-game homestand.

Lane College head coach John Bates said he knows it is important to finish the season strong and believes a win over a big program like Freed-Hardeman gives his very young team confidence going into the final games of the season.

"It was a huge win for us," Bates said. "We are starting a foundation going into next year, especially this weekend as we go play Tuskegee.

"The guys are real confident. All week they have been very upbeat. We've got six games left and we've got to finish it off."
