BIRMINGHAM – The historic run the Lane College men's basketball team has had this season has come to an end at the hands of Morehouse College 74-64 Wednesday night at the Bill Harris Arena in the quarterfinal round of the SIAC championship tournament in Birmingham, Ala.
The Dragons led for most of the first half, the Maroon Tigers took the lead 32-30 and eventually took a slim 34-32 lead into the halftime break. After trading the lead for most of the second half, the Maroon Tigers pulled away late thanks to foul trouble from Lane that led to Morehouse making 27 of their 36 free throw attempts. On the contrast, the Dragons only went to the line 23 times.
Lane head coach
Bryanth Basemore said his team came into the game prepared and excited but it was just not their night on the hardwood.
"We didn't do what we needed to do tonight to win the ballgame," Basemore said. "We had great preparation up to this point but tonight we just fell short."
Three seniors finished their Lane College careers with double-digit scoring led by
Terrance Bridgeman's 21 points.
Maurice Alexander was all over the court, finishing with 12 points, four rebounds, five assists and three blocks in 33 minutes.
Devontay Clark shot 60 percent from the floor, finishing one rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.
"Our ultimate goal was to do what we did in the regular season," Basemore said. "Of course you want to finish it off with a conference championship since you took care of all of the other accolades. Unfortunately, that didn't happen for us this year.
"But, we'll love on our seniors to help them get over this because they will get through it. It's a part of life, the ups and the downs."
