Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. (October 7, 2017) - Even in a loss, there is a lot to cheer about if you are a Lane College football fan.
Trailing 27-0, junior quarterback
Marquez Pickett, making his season debut, threw his first pass of the season. That pass turned out to be a 30-yard bomb to
Aaron Thomas, who fought off a defender to fight his way into the end zone. One pass, one completion and the comeback had begun.
The end result was not what the 1,882 fans wanted to see as the Dragons fell to visiting Langston University 27-21 Saturday afternoon during the homecoming festivities at Lane Field. But as the fans said after the game, the "what might have been" comeback win was sure fun to watch.
After Pickett put the Dragons on the board, running back
Marcus Holliday cut the lead to 27-14 when he punched it in from four-yards out, culminating a five-play, 20-yard drive that was set up thanks to a
Phillip Haynes Jr. sack, leading to a fumble recovery from
DeMichael McQueen to give Lane the short field.
On the Dragons' next possession, it was again Pickett's turn. On 4th-and-7 on the Lions' 30-yard line, Pickett found
Omauri Hampton in the back quarter of the end zone to cut the Langston lead to six points, 27-21.
The Dragons would have a chance to win it as they got the ball back on their own 20-yard line with 50 seconds remaining, but were not able to get anything going offensively as they were playing with no timeouts left.
Holliday finished with 132 all-purpose yards, including 125 on the ground and a touchdown. Pickett went 7-for-15 for 84 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Dragons hit the road for two straight weeks, starting with a conference matchup at Fort Valley State University on Saturday October 14. Kickoff from Fort Valley, Ga. is scheduled for 2 p.m.
