Box Score Dragons Claim the Victory in the "Battle of Jackson"
The Dragons traveled across town to take on the Bulldogs of Union University in what was tabbed the "Battle of Jackson". This would be the first meeting between the two men's basketball teams since the 1992-93 game. Both teams compete in the NCAA Division 2 which made this a regional game as they play in different conferences. The battle was fast and furious until the end as the Dragons came away with a 78-72 victory.
Breaking it down: The Bulldogs of Union University jumped out to an early 17-10 lead over the Dragons connecting on (3) three pointers The Dragons rallied the troops and responded with a 14-1 run to take a 29-23 lead into halftime. The second half action was a true battle for both teams.
Kendarius Ash scored in the opening minutes of the second half to extend the lead 31-23. But the Bulldogs would connect on four consecutive three-pointers to regain the lead 42-40 at the 13:56 mark of the second half. The remainder of the half was a back-and-forth battle as each team would regain the lead from each other several times. The Dragons went on to build a 10 point advantage with just under four minutes to play. The Bulldogs wasn't finished just yet as Trey Boyd continued to drain 3-pointers to close the gap to just 3 points with sixteen seconds left to play. The comeback was cut short as key free throws at the end of the game helped the Dragons secure the victory.
By the numbers: The Dragons scored 19 points off of turnovers by the Bulldogs in the game. The Dragons won the battle of the boards 31-27 and completely dominating the offensive rebounds 8-0. The Bulldogs connected on (12) three-pointers compared to the Dragons five. The Dragons edged the Bulldogs slightly in free-throw percentage connecting on 13 of 21 for 61.9% while the Bulldogs connected on 16 of 26 for 61.5%. The Dragons were lead in scoring by
Maurice Alexander with 17 points followed by
Kendarius Ash 16 points (9 rebounds), and
Montez Williams with 14 points. The Bulldogs was lead by Trey Boyd with 29 total points.
Back in Action: The Dragons (2-3) will travel to Florence, AL for another South Regional game with the Lions (3-0) from the University of North Alabama on Saturday November 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM.
