Box Score BCU Wildcats Hold-On Defeat the Dragons
Sept.19, 2105
Daytona Beach, Fla.
Loading up the bus, traveling across the country, rebounding from a heart-breaking loss, and facing a NCAA Division I team was what the Dragons faced in week three of the football season. The question of the week… how would the Dragons respond?
During the week of practice, the Dragons went about their business of game preparation as if they were playing any other team on the schedule. Playing a Division I team or not, you still have to play one game at a time. The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman held on for a narrow 7-3 victory over the Dragons.
The Dragons defense set the tone of the game on the Wildcats' first possession. The Wildcats gained 37 yards on seven plays before being forced to punt to the Dragons. The Dragons first offensive possession had the look of the previous week's success in moving the ball. A 16-play 70-yard drive in which the Dragons collected (5) first downs, fell short on a missed field goal attempt. The first quarter ended with the Wildcats driving and a 0-0 score.
The second quarter was more about defense for both teams. The Wildcats completed a scoring drive with a nine-yard rushing play from Anthony Johnson. The extra point was good giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 9:23 on the clock. After changing possessions, the Wildcats attempted, but missed, a 36 yard field goal as time ran-out in the second quarter to carry a 7-0 lead to halftime.
The third quarter did not produce any points for either team; however the Dragons defense forced a fumble on the first Wildcat possession in the second half.
RaDraven Wrancher got to the quarterback as he was in the act of throwing, creating a fumble at the Dragons 14-yard line.
Gabriel Mass collected the fumble and advanced the ball up field for a 12 yard return. The score remained 7-0 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter started as the Dragons'
Ira George-Coates put a stop to the next Wildcat drive as he stepped in front of the would-be receiver for the interception, in the end zone. The Dragons took advantage of the turn-over by putting 3-points on the scoreboard. Carlas Moore connected on a 28 yard field goal with 6:38 on the clock for the Dragons. (Wildcats 7 Dragons 3). On the next kick-off, the Dragons'
Jai Kinsey forced a fumble that allowed
Anthony Blackmon to fall on the loose ball for the Dragons. The offensive unit could not move the ball, forcing an unsuccessful field goal attempt by the Dragons for a final score of 7-3 in favor of the Wildcats.
Dewayne Brown collected 15 total tackles as Javonte Kelly added 10 total tackles for the Dragons' defense. Offensively the Dragons' gained 288 net yards with
Rodney Willingham leading the rushing attack with 70 yards.
The Dragons fall to 1-2 on the season and will host the Golden Tigers from Tuskegee University (3-0) for the home opener on Sept. 26. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 PM at Lane Field. We would like to invite everyone to come out and support the Dragons as they play the first divisional game of the season.Â
