Central State Spoils Lane College Homecoming

Jackson, TN

What a difference a week makes, is a statement used by many in situations similar to this week in football. After a great win last week in the Augusta City Classic, the expectations of carrying over that feeling to homecoming did not produce the same result. A week of Homecoming activities had current students and past alumni together to the teme of "Remembering the Past, while Embracing the Future." The "Main Event" would be the football game between the Marauders from Central State University and the Dragons of Lane College. Both teams started the contest holding the same record (2-4 overall and 0-2 SIAC Western Division).  Special teams play and costly turn-overs were the winners as the Marauders took full advantage of each opportunity for a 21-0 victory over the Dragons.

1st quarter:

With 6:27 on the clock, the Dragons were forced to punt from the shadows of their own end-zone. A low snap led to a desperate attempt to get the kick away, which ended up in the arms of the Marauders' Jonathan Dixon in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point was good for a Marauders 7-0 lead. On the next possession, the Dragons had a quick 3-and-out series, setting up a punting situation. Nehemiah Coward broke through the line to get the block and recovered the ball on the ten yard line before running it in for the score. The extra point was good and the Marauders led 14-0.

2nd Quarter:

Second quarter action was mostly defense as both teams struggled to produce much offense. A combined 84 yards of total offense had the score 14-0 at halftime.

3rd Quarter:

The first possession of the second half for the Dragons did not go as planned. On the first play from scrimmage, the Marauders broke the line for a quarterback sack and a loss of a yard on the play. The second play resulted in an interception and return for the Marauders setting up a short field for the Dragons defense. The Marauders took advantage of the short field and scored another touchdown on a 5-play, 27-yard drive. The extra point was good, building a 21-0 score at the end of three quarters.

4th Quarter:

Fourth quarter action produced more defensive plays resulting in zero points by either team for a final score 21-0. With the loss, the Dragons fall to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in divisional play. The Dragons have two divisional games remaining on the schedule with one coming next week against the Golden Bears from Miles College. The Dragons travel to Birmingham, AL for that contest on Oct. 24. The last home game of the season will be on Oct 31st with a divisional game against Kentucky State University. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 PM at Lane Field. We invite you to come out early as we will recognize the senior members of the football team before the game..
