Dragons Win a Close One Against Tigers

In the most exciting game of the year for the Dragons to date, the 28-27 victory over the Stillman Tigers had everything you might want in a game. The Defensive unit forced two fumbles while intercepting the Tigers' quarterback twice, which led to big plays and touchdowns for the Dragons.

With the outcome of the contest, both teams now sit at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the competitive SIAC Western Division.

The Dragons were first to get on the scoreboard on a six-play 20 yard drive for a touchdown. Quarterback Chris Rini, who is the SIAC passing leader, connected with Duke Coleman on a six- yard pass for the score. The extra point was blocked for a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Starting the second quarter, the Tigers would answer the score with a five yard pass from quarterback Josh Straughan to Omyon Roberson. The extra point was good giving the Tigers a 7-6 lead.

The Dragons were held to a three-and-out series, leading to a 26-yard punt from Michael Ruffin pinning the Tigers down at the Stillman 19 yard line. On the first play the Dragons forced a fumble to be recovered by Gilbert Fernandez, setting the Dragons up with great field advantage. McKinsley Marbury called his own number from the four yard line and the Dragons scored a touchdown. The extra point was good putting the Dragons back on top 13-7.

The second Tiger touchdown came on an eight-play 70 yard drive resulting in a Straughan to Octavian Ford three yard touchdown connection and a 14-13 Tiger lead. The Dragons had one last possession in the first half with 4:01 on the clock. The drive took 11 plays covering 79 yards for the Dragons touchdown. Rini scooted in from one yard out for the score. With fourteen seconds on the clock, the Dragons called timeout to finalize the play for the two point conversion. Rini connected with Jamion Dunning in the end zone for the conversion and a 21-14 halftime lead.

In the third quarter the Tigers were the only team to score on a pass from Straughan to Raymond Coats for seven yards and a 21-21 tie game.

The Dragons scored first in the final quarter on a 15-yard rushing play by Jerald Hatchett with 13:58 on the clock. With time becoming a factor, the Tigers mounted a drive of 10 plays and 93-yards for the touchdown as back-up quarterback Torrance Moise scrambled for 33 yards and the touchdown. The game tying extra point was blocked by the Dragons for a 28-27 score. The Tigers attempted an on-side kick which was recovered by the Dragons and a final score of 28-27.

For the Dragons, Rini finished with 204 yards passing and one touchdown on 23-of-32 attempts. Gregory Moore caught eight passes for 98 yards while Duke Coleman finished with seven catches for 56 yards. Jack Howard had 14 tackles with Chris Rayborn tallying 11.

The Dragons will host the Golden Rams of Albany State on October 12 at Lane Field. The kick-off is scheduled at 2:00 pm.
