Dragons win series over Thorobreds

JACKSON, Tenn. | Lane took game one of a doubleheader with Kentucky State on Sunday by a score of 6-5, securing a series victory for the Dragons.

Game 1
Lane 6
KSU 5

The Dragons struck first with a pair of doubles in the opening frame from Chris O'Neal and Christian Armstrong to go up 1-0.

The Thorobreds got on the board in the top of the third inning when Marcus Chapman led off the inning with a double followed by a single from Aram Kumar to put runners on first and third. A fielding error on a sharply hit ball by Kevin Givhan plated both baserunners and gave KSU a 2-1 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Treviz Brown earned a walk followed by an infield single from O'Neal set the table for Zach Elias who doubled down the right field line to retake the lead for the hosts in the bottom of the third. The Dragons tacked on three more runs to push the led to 6-2.

KSU added a run in the fifth and threatened in their last at-bat, pushing two runs across and bringing the tying run to third base before reliever Javien Woods struck out the next two batters to end the game and give the home team a 6-5 win.

Thomas Arias (1-1) got the win in 5.0 innings of work. Arias surrendered two earned runs on five hits and struck out four batters. The starter also went 1-for-3 at the plate with a RBI.

Woods (1) picked up the save in 2.0 innings of relief work.

Game 2
Lane 6
KSU 10

The two teams traded leads early in game two as there were five lead changes in the first three innings. Lane built a small lead in the fourth behind a sacrifice fly from Arias that scored Elias who led off the inning with a walk.

KSU charged back in the top of the fifth inning behind a pair of Lane errors and a RBI triple from Byron Famble that tied the game 5-5. Famble then scored on a single from Kumar to give the visitors the lead.

The Dragons pulled back even in the home half after Brown, who was pinch running for Woods who led off the inning with a single, scored on a sacrifice fly from Tavariz Brown.

The Thorobreds exploded in the sixth with four runs on four hits highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Famble to give the visitors a 10-6 lead. KSU held off the hosts to salvage game four and avoid the series sweep.

Lane is back in action on Wednesday, March 17th, when they travel to Holly Springs, Miss. for a doubleheader with Rust College. Game one is scheduled to start at noon.
