Dragons defeat Tuskegee for the first time in school history

by Joel Worthington

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – History was made in Alabama on Saturday. The Lane College football team had faced Tuskegee 25 times in program history, losing every contest. This time, the Dragons return home with a victory, spoiling the Golden Tigers' homecoming 21-17.

The bugaboo from a week ago turned into a strength this week as the Dragons were 8-for-14 on 3rd down while holding the hosts to 3-of-9. The conversions led to the visitors dominating time of possession, holding the ball for over 36 minutes while running 70 plays compared to Tuskegee's 45.

Vyron Brown's offense churned out 22 first downs behind a rushing attack that totaled 259 yards and averaged 5.6 yards per carry.

"We won today at the line of scrimmage," said Brown. "The offensive and defensive lines won consistently throughout the game and put us in position to win."

After giving up 820 yards rushing in the previous two games, the Lane defense flexed their muscles on Saturday, allowing just 72 yards on the ground.

Nijul Canada led the team with eight tackles while Brayce McKenzie added seven tackles with 2.0 sacks.

Mackenzie Howard had a big game from the linebacker position, posting six total tackles, 1.0 tackles for loss, an interception, and a fumble recovery.

Ike Brown carried the ball 25 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Anthony Evelyn pulled in eight passes for 64 yards. Micah Grigsby caught five passes for 58 yards and including a 15-yard touchdown.

The Dragons will be in Ohio next Saturday for their final division game of the season against Central State. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM EST.
