Late touchdown lifts Lane past Central State

by Joel Worthington

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Lane College football team capitalized on a couple of late stops from their defense and turned them into scores as they squeaked out a 16-14 victory over Central State on Saturday.

Trailing 14-3 in the fourth quarter, quarterback Michael Huntley took a first and goal shotgun snap around the left side for the Dragons first touchdown of the game.

Lane would get stops from their defense on the next two possessions but stalled inside the 10-yard line on fourth and goal on both the ensuing drives.

The defense stepped up once again and forced a turnover and the third time was the charm. On fourth and goal with just over two minutes remaining, the Dragons lined up in their jumbo package as reigning SIAC Player of the Week Ike Brown punched it in from two yards out to give Lane their first lead of the game.

The defense iced the game on the next possession, forcing a turnover on downs and securing the road victory and keeping Lane's hopes of SIAC West Division title alive.

Lane racked up 225 yards rushing along with 21 total first downs. The visitors did struggle through the air in wet conditions, netting a season-low 54 yards passing.

"It's always good to get a win, even when you don't play your best," said head coach Vyron Brown. "The guys stepped up when it mattered most and put it away in the end."

Ball control was a key component in the comeback victory as Lane held a more than 2-to-1 advantage in time of possession. Third downs were a big part of that as the Dragons defense held the Marauders to 0-for-9 on third down while the offense converted 7-of-17 chances.

The Dragons will wrap up the regular season in South Carolina next Saturday when they take on Benedict. The two teams last met in 2019 with Lane taking the contest 30-23. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM EST.
