Football drops a nail-biter to Miles

by Joel Worthington

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Lane College football team hosted Miles College on Saturday for Senior Day.

The Golden Bears took an early lead when Kingston Davis broke free for a 56-yard touchdown run. The hosts then went three and out but benefited from a muffed punt that pinned Miles deep in their own territory.

On their first play from scrimmage following the punt, the visitors tried to gain a little breathing room with a run up that middle that was stuffed by Andrew Farmer for a safety.

Lane took the ensuing free kick and drove 50 yards in 10 plays capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Ike Brown.

The Dragons defense earned another stop and struck quickly with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Michael Huntley to Anthony Evelyn for a 15-7 lead.

Miles would earn the next four scores to build a 31-15 lead with under 10 minutes to play in the game.

The Lane offense then caught fire, putting together and nine play, 75-yard drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown run from Huntley. A two-point conversion from Joseph Logan made it a one possession game with 8:45 remaining.

A short drive followed for the Golden Bears, moving 47 yards in 2:46 that resulted in a 33-yard field goal for the visitors. The Dragons immediately struck back, scoring on the second play of the next drive when Huntley connected with Evelyn for a 65-yard touchdown. Huntley then punched it in for another two points to make it a field goal game.

On the following drive, Jeffrey Johnson had a huge tackle for loss on a second down play to force a third and long for Miles, but Davis broke through the line for an 11-yard gain and first down as the two-time defending SIAC champions escaped Jackson with a win.

Third down was the Achilles heel for Lane as they converted zero out of 11 chances while allowing 8-of-14 conversions on defense.

Huntley finished with 248 yards passing while Evelyn had 176 yards receiving.

Johnson led the defense with 11 total tackles while Farmer finished with 10. Mackenzie Howard was in on nine tackles and had a fumble recovery.

The Dragons will travel to Alabama for a showdown with Tuskegee next Saturday, October 23rd. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM and the game will be aired on ESPN+.
