MORROW, Ga. - The Lane College Dragons survived a back-and-forth battle on Friday afternoon, defeating Albany State University 71–69 in the semifinals of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament to punch their ticket to the championship game.
In a game that featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes, Lane relied on balanced scoring and a strong presence on the boards to secure the narrow victory.
With the score tied 69-69, Lauren Lain missed a shot in the paint with two seconds remaining and Dyani Bernstine secured the offensive board and tipped it in at the buzzer to give the Dragons the win.
Like the quarterfinal game, Lane struggled offensively early, shooting just 18.8 percent in the opening quarter as Albany State took a 12–8 lead after the first period. The Dragons began to find their rhythm in the second quarter, battling back to trail by just one point at halftime.
The third quarter proved pivotal for Lane. The Dragons shot over 47 percent in the period and used a strong inside presence to take control. A three-pointer from Europe Brown and several key baskets in the paint helped Lane take momentum heading into the final quarter.
Albany State continued to push down the stretch, cutting the deficit to one possession multiple times in the fourth quarter. However, Lane held firm defensively and controlled the glass to secure the two-point victory.
Bernstine led the Dragons with 17 points and nine rebounds, providing a strong inside presence throughout the game. Europe Brown added 12 points, including two three-pointers, while Lain and Alexis Rowe each contributed 11 points. Rowe also recorded a game-high 12 rebounds as Lane dominated the boards 48–40.
The Dragons also capitalized on second-chance opportunities, outscoring Albany State 21–17 in second-chance points while scoring 42 points in the paint.
With the win, Lane advances to the championship game of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and will face Miles College on Saturday, March 7 at 3:00 p.m. (CT) with the conference title on the line.
