Lane College President Logan Hampton announced that Dragons Head Football Coach Derrick Burroughs will step into a full-time role as Athletic Director for the College, vacating the seat of head football coach. A search for a new head football coach will begin immediately.

After seven years as head football coach for the Dragons, Burroughs said he wants to shift his focus more towards improving all 12 Division II athletic programs here at Lane.

Lane celebrates Coach Burroughs for his servant leadership he has provided in leading the football team on- and off-the-field and for his passion for developing student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential.

"I want to thank Coach Burroughs for his dedication to Lane's football," Dr. Hampton, said. "I know that many of our current players, their parents and alumni have close associations with Coach Burroughs. I am glad that he will continue to forge ahead with our athletic department."

During his second tenure at Lane, beginning in 2015, Burroughs re-established the "Lane College Athletics Hall of Fame" program and was the brainchild behind "Dinner with the Pros." During his tenure, close to $535,000 was raised in the athletic program.

Burroughs first began coaching at Lane in 2012, leading the Dragons to an 11-9 overall record over two seasons including a 6-4 season in 2013.

After a brief stint with a Division I program, Burroughs returned to Lane in January 2015. His goal was to improve the perception and performance of Lane's athletic program. As Burroughs led the football team in gradual positive progress, He picked up signature wins over SIAC opponents Benedict College and Kentucky State University in 2015, non-conference rivals Texas College and Langston University in 2016, a season the Dragons finished 5-5 overall.

He followed up that year with a season opening win on the road over Texas College in 2017, capping off the season with a come-from-behind victory over SIAC West Division rival Central State University at home.

In 2018, after picking up a homecoming win over Allen University, Burroughs and the Dragons shocked the conference, knocking off powerhouse Miles College 15-14 thanks to a 34-yard field goal as time expired at home in Jackson.

This past season, he led the Dragons to back-to-back home conference wins to finish the season at the new and improved Lane Field.

During his tenure as head football coach, Burroughs saw multiple players from his former Dragons' squads go on to play at the next level, while also producing many players that received First Team All-Conference as well as First Team All-Academic SIAC honors.
