JACKSON, Tenn. (February 9, 2018) - A good home crowd and beautiful Spring-like weather welcomed the Lane College baseball team as they officially opened the season at home, taking on Harris-Stowe University at Hub City Field on Friday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the Hornets came out the victors, taking both games of the doubleheader 7-5 and 18-3, respectfully.
After a rocky first inning giving up five runs and another in the top of the second, the Dragons settled in and slowly cut into HSU's lead, mainly thanks to relief pitcher
Malcom Davis in Game 1.
Davis came in midway through the third inning, pitching the remaining 4.2 innings, giving up one unearned run off one hit, walking three and striking out two.
Treviz Brown got the Dragons on the board advancing from second on a Hornets' double error in the bottom of the first. Two innings later,
Chris O'Neal cut the Harris-Stowe lead in half with a two-RBI single to right field, scoring
DeShawn Cole and
Tavariz Brown.
O'Neal picked up another RBI in the bottom of the sixth when he hit a solo home run to dead centerfield to cut the Hornets' lead to 6-4. After Harris-Stowe tacked on another in the top of the seventh,
Melvin Crayton picked up a pinch hit RBI when his ground out to third base scored
Clemia Jackson.
In the second game of the doubleheader,
DeShawn Cole finished 3-for-3 with two RBI while in relief,
Alexis Enriquez pitched 3.0 innings, allowing three unearned runs off four hits, struck out five and walked two.
The Dragons games on Saturday against Rust College were canceled due to weather. They are back in action Tues. Feb. 20 when they travel to Henderson, Tenn. to take on Freed-Hardeman University. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
