Gregory Liberty

Coach Liberty is entering his first season as a member of the Lane College Football Staff. He is a high-energy coach who enjoys teaching the fundamentals of the game from the ground up. His expertise includes teaching the game, motivating athletes, and recruiting. He believes that building a hard-working, competitive culture and mentoring student-athletes for success in the classroom, on the playing field, and for life after college are key components of a student-athlete's college experience.

A native of the Washington D.C. area, Coach Liberty attended Forestville High School in Prince George's County, Maryland, where he was a four-year letterman in football, track, and wrestling. He was selected for the Washington Post's First Team All-Metropolitan Football Team and the Prince George's County Journal All-County Team. He was recruited by Super Bowl-winning coach, Bruce Arians to play at Temple University, where he was also a four-year letterman. During his sophomore year, he was once named Big East Conference Player of the Week.

After college, Coach Liberty enlisted in the United States Army, where he served on active duty in several locations around the world. Upon transitioning out of the Army, in 2004 he began coaching high school football in the Nashville area at Goodpasture Christian School, where he spent the next ten years. While at Goodpasture he was part of a coaching staff that would go on to win two state championships and two-time state runner-up.

In 2017, Coach Liberty left high school coaching and reunited with his college coach Bruce Arians, joining the Arizona Cardinals as a defensive/special teams assistant. His next stop was at Sam Houston State University as an assistant linebacker coach. There, he was part of a team that won the Southland Conference championship and made a deep playoff run that ended against a North Dakota State team led by Carson Wentz.

Following his time with Sam Houston State Coach Liberty had an opportunity to work in the NCAA Division 3 realm First as the Defensive Line Coach/Recruiting Coordinator at Thiel College a member of the President's Athletic Conference (PAC) in Greenville Pennsylvania. Following his time with Thiel College in 2019 he was hired as linebackers coach at East Texas Baptist University a member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC). While working at East Texas Baptist University Coach Liberty coached and developed Division III All Conference and All-American Linebacker Anton Carter.

In 2021 Coach Liberty was hired as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Rice University. Going into the 2022 Season the Owls had the top recruiting class in the American Conference signing All American QB J.T. Daniels out of the transfer portal and current Washington Commanders wide receiver Luke McCaffrey. This recruiting class was instrumental in leading Rice to its first bowl game in over 10 years. In 2023 the Owls became bowl eligible again and Coach Liberty was a part of a Defensive Coaching staff that finished top 50 in the NCAA in total Defense.

Coach Liberty has worked on staff at all levels of football high school Division I, II, III, as well as the NFL. He believes that coaching football is a people business and promotes respect and mutual caring relationships throughout the staff and players. He is married to Rasheeda Liberty They have two children, Nailah Cole and Malik Liberty.
