Softball wins two on Day 1 of the SIAC Crossover

HOOVER, Ala. - The Lane College softball team claimed two impressive wins on Tuesday, the first day of the SIAC Crossover. The Dragons defeated Benedict 11-4 and took down Clark Atlanta 11-8. 

Game 1 Highlights:
  • Lane's Power Surge: The game was tied at 4-4 after four innings, but Lane broke the game open with a monster fifth inning. Sierra Luster provided the big blow with a 2-run home run, and Ja'Kai Ray added a 2-RBI single. In total, Lane scored seven runs in the frame, including a stolen home by Ray who also homered earlier in the game, finishing with a 2-for-3 game and 3 RBIs.

  • Pitching: Lane's starter A. Phillips (W, 5-4) picked up the win after going 5.0 innings, allowing 4 hits and allowing 3 earned runs. She struck out 3 and walked 3. Jonni Sanchez came in for 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing only 1 hit.

  • Notable Contributions: Kyra Vieux added two hits and an RBI for Lane, while Kathrynanne Ivy also contributed two hits, including a double.

Game 2 Highlights:

  • Lane's Early Dominance: Lane got off to a scorching start, putting up four runs in the first inning. Ray homered again to drive in two runs, and Journey Custer followed with a double that brought in two more. The aggressive early offense gave Lane a commanding 4-0 lead after one inning.

  • Clark Atlanta's Big 3rd Inning: After Lane extended their lead to 6-0, Clark Atlanta responded with a huge six-run rally in the third to tie the game.

  • Lane Regains the Lead: After a tense couple of innings, Lane pulled ahead once again in the fifth, with Custer driving in a run with a bunt single to make it 7-6. But Clark Atlanta would not go away easily. They managed to tie it at 8-8 in the bottom of the fifth with a couple of key singles.

  • Lane Closes It Out: Lane's offense wasn't done yet. Ray hit a clutch double in the sixth to give Lane a 9-8 lead. Then, Ivy belted a two-run homer to left field, extending Lane's lead to 11-8. That proved to be the final blow.

  • Pitching Efforts: Phillips (W, 6-4) earned her second win of the day after a solid 3.0 innings of relief, allowing just one earned run on 4 hits. Koralie Morin (S, 1) earned the save by tossing 4.0 total innings, giving up 6 runs, walking 3, and striking out 3.
