Softball knocks off Spring Hill; honors Seniors

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Lane College softball team honored its seniors on Friday, one day after knocking off Spring Hill College 7-6 at the West Tennessee Sportsplex.

After forcing the Badgers to go three up, three down in the top of the first, the Dragons led the home half of the inning off in historic fashion as the first three batters hit home runs to give Lane an early 3-0 lead.

Shawna McNair got the scoring started as the speedy slapper found the right-centerfield gap and was off to the races, rounding third base before the defense even reached the ball.

Millay Lambert followed suit with a home run to left field. Kaylee Stinnett then sent the first pitch she saw over the centerfield wall to cap the improbable start for the Dragons.

Spring Hill answered back with a run in the second inning off a sacrifice fly, but Lane responded in the home half when Kela Ray led off the inning with another solo home run for the hosts.

The Badgers came within one run in the fifth inning before the Dragons plated three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by RBI singles from Halle Koger and Savanna Johnson, to push the lead back to four.

Spring Hill made some noise with two outs in the seventh, but Jersey Cabana was able to induce a pop fly to second base with two runners on to close out the win for Lane.

Autumn Phillips (12-6) picked up the win in 4.0 innings of work. The sophomore allowed just one earned.

Cabana (5) got the save after going 3.0 innings and striking out four. The strikeouts moved her total to 177 on the season, breaking the record held by Hall of Fame member Shawnae Campbell for most strikeouts in a season.

A Friday rain out forced an indoor celebration of the seniors at Parkstone Grille. The class will go down as having the winningest two year stretch in program history, having been a part of 59 wins and counting.
