Lane goes 4-0 at HBCU Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Lane College softball team took part in the first annual BGPSB Invitational this weekend at Gresham Park in Atlanta. The minority softball organization aims to build the game in urban cities across America and hosted three HBCUs for a weekend of games to help kickstart their campaign.

Lane College, Paine College, and Florida Memorial University played a round-robin series at the inaugural event.

Day one saw lots of offense from all teams as the Dragons defeated Paine 12-9 in a back-and-forth affair that saw both teams combine for 25 hits, four lead changes, and three ties before Lane finally closed out the Lions off back-to-back doubles from Savanna Johnson and Jayden McCarty in the sixth inning.

The second game of the day was another tightly contested matchup as FMU jumped on Lane early, scoring four runs in the first and holding the Dragons scoreless until the third inning.

Another McCarty double plated a run to open the scoring for Lane who would go on to score two runs in each of the next three innings to take the lead. FMU pulled to within one and had the tying run on third base in the bottom of the seventh, but freshman Jersey Cabana closed the door on the comeback bid, striking out the next Lions batter to close the game.

There was less drama on day two as the Lane battery overpowered the opposing lineups, allowing no earned runs and striking out 16 batters as Lane defeated FMU 9-1 and Paine 6-0 to sweep the invitational.

McCarty proved to be a near impossible out over the weekend, going 7-for-12 including two doubles with seven RBI and five runs scored.

Millay Lambert was 8-for-16 in the four games and slugged two doubles and two home runs while driving in seven runs.

Sophomore infielder Kela Ray had an on-base percentage of .615 while freshman Shawna McNair led the way with six runs scored.

Pitching was lights out for Lane over the weekend. Reigning SIAC Pitcher of the Week Autumn Phillips was 2-0 and carried a 1.08 ERA over 13 innings pitched. She allowed just two earned runs and struck out 12 batters.

Cabana was 2-0 on the weekend and also registered her first career save. The California native struck out 15 hitters and touted a 1.50 ERA in 14 innings pitched.

The last win on Saturday also gave head coach Joel Worthington his 50th career win as a collegiate head coach.

Lane is back home on Monday, February 27th, when they play Southeastern in a doubleheader at the West Tennessee Sportsplex. Game one is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
