Sanchez, Stinnett lead Dragons in sweep of MUW

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Lane College softball team hosted the University of Mississippi for Women on Tuesday at the West Tennessee Sportsplex.

Game 1

Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the 6th inning, the Dragons were able to muster some offense after Jayden McCarty and Jonni Sanchez both singled with one out. A sacrifice fly from Halle Koger plated Lane's first run.

Lakien Dillard brought the hosts to within one when she beat out a bunt single that scored Sanchez on the throw.

Raelynn Lee and Millay Lambert both singled to load the bases when Kaylee Stinnett sent one deep over the left center field fence to give Lane their first lead of the game.

MUW threatened in the 7th, loading the bases with one out. Sanchez came in and closed the door, getting a strike out and ground out to end the game.

Alyssa Moore (4-1) got the win in 1.0 innings of relief.

Game 2

The second game of the doubleheader saw a similar fate with the Dragons struggling to string together any offense and entering the bottom of the 6th down 1-0.

Lee led off the inning with a double to left center field and Stinnett then tied the game with a double down the left field line that barely caught chalk as it screamed into the outfield.

Kela Ray then reached on a bunt single that moved Stinnett to third.

After a pair of strikeouts, Sanchez took her turn at the plate and roped a single into left field to drive in the eventual game-winning run.

In addition to her heroics at the plate, Sanchez pitched a gem, going 7.0 innings and allowing three hits and one run while striking out nine batters.

The Dragons wrap up their season this weekend with a series against Miles College. Lane will host a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 2:00 PM followed by a single game on Friday at noon.
