FAIRFIELD, Ala. (March 30, 2019) - Every good manager in the bigs will tell you, it's not about winning games that takes you far in the post season, it's about winning series. The Lady Dragons faced an uphill battle to complete that task on Saturday in Fairfield, Ala. But like any great team that goes deep in the post season, they found a way to get it done.
The Lane College softball team went into the last inning of the three-game set with SIAC opponent, host Miles College tied at one game apiece, trailing by three runs Saturday. The Lady Dragons picked up the win in Game 1 on Friday convincingly 12-4 before dropping a heartbreaker in Game 2 earlier on Saturday 9-8 in 10 innings. Going into the seventh inning, the Lady Golden Bears were up 13-10.
So, it's three for the tie, four for the win, right? Nah. Let's just put up a seven spot.
The Lady Dragons ran all the way through the rotation in the top of the seventh and got on the board when
JaiMesia Parks, who led off the inning with a walk, scored off a
Raelynn Lee single to right field.
One down, six to go.
Lee advanced to second on the play thanks to a Miles throwing error and advanced to third on a wid pitch that scored
Whitney Knighton.
Two down.
Kyra Reed hit a groundout to the shortstop that scored Lee.
Three down. Game tied.
Skylar Veazie' singled to short, stole second and
Brittany Ensley walked. It was two on and one down when
Delayna Malveaux singled to left field to score Veazie.
Four on the board. Lane leads by one.
Malveaux was on second thanks to a throwing error on her at bat when
Samaiya Montgomery slapped a single to left of her own that scored Ensley and Malveaux.
Six on the board. Lane lead is three.
Kristen Young added the final run when her ground out to short scored Montgomery from third.
Lane lead is now 17-13. Now to hold.
If your looking for some dramatic comeback that will hold you on the edge of your phone right now, Lane College freshman pitcher
Brittany Ensley is sorry(not sorry) to disappoint you as she, for the first time in the game, struck out the side to secure the win in the circle.
Coming in relief in the bottom of the second, Ensley gave up two earned runs off three hits. She walked two and struck out three in 4.1 innings.
So, Ensley only finished with three strikeouts in the game.
But, boy did she pick the right time to do it.
